An asphalt jungle in the midst of the Amazon Rain Forest, Manaus is the leading financial, corporate and trade center of Brazil´s Northern Region. As the state capital, the city is the main port of entry for visitors who wish to venture into the world´s largest tropical rain forest. Manaus lies on the left bank of the Negro River, near the Anavilhanas Archipelago. Many beaches and ecological sites lie near the city. In addition to the Negro River, Manaus is also located near the Solimões and Amazonas Rivers. The regional cuisine is unique and the landscape includes an enormous variety of plants and animals, including rare species. Many historical buildings and monuments were built in Manaus during the state´s rubber boom. Among these are the impressive Teatro Amazonas opera house located on Largo São Sebastião square, and the Mercado Municipal Adolpho Lisboa market, The city has several parks and ecological sites, among which are the Bosque da Ciência, Parque Municipal do Mindu, Museu da Amazônia, Jardim Botânico Adolpho Ducke, CIGS,etc.
